1935 Mercedes 290D 4 Door Cabriolet
German Beauty.
This 1935 290D Mercedes came to the USA sometime after WWII. The first documented history is in Maryland in 1976 The car spent almost 20 years in the Tupelo Automobile Museum in Mississippi which closed in April 2019.
174 eclectic cars from the Museum collection were sold at auction. A New York dealer bought the 1935 Mercedes and sold it to the current owner.
The new owner, a retired Doctor, took the car apart, and brought the car to the Paterek Brothers restoration shop in Chatham NJ. The Patereks, Ray, John and Andrew, spent an estimated 3500 hours doing a body off nut and bolt restoration. The body, which has a wood structure, had to be completely rebuilt from scratch. Many parts had to be ordered from sources in Germany. Many parts had to be done by hand. Tremendous amounts of factory research were done by the owner. The Doctor drove many of the chrome parts back and forth to a chrome-plater in Philadelphia. Quite a feat considering all this was done while the man was in his 90’s!!
The interior was fully made by hand from sheets of leather by Ray Paterek. Patterns were made from remnants of old interior and from photographs from books. The top was done by the late Jim Kraus, known for his Pebble beach winning tops and interiors. Sadly, Jim passed just as he was finishing this top. Andrew Paterek formed many of the steel panels by hand. Countless hours were spent on the Laser straight black and green bodywork.
The owner was honored to have this Mercedes invited to the 2025 Prestigious Greenwich Concours d’ Elegance. The car was awarded the Red Class award. $225,000
